Theresa Staples
Change Manager & Communicator
Fun Fact
I enjoy decorative paper planning and almost always have a notebook and pen with
me. There’s something about creating a page with stickers and colored pens that helps me
remember and engage with the process. I even journal about the books I read. I’m always
looking for recommendations about what to pick up next.
Background
I’m from the Beach Cities of Los Angeles, specifically Torrance, CA. I am a California
State University, Fullerton, College of Communications alumna. I hold a PROSCI certification.
While learning about PROSCI, I realized that I had been doing change management in some
capacity throughout my entire career. Most, if not all, communications work involves changing someone's mind.
Path to Change Management
I’ve been doing change management officially for about 10 years. Because my
training is in communications, I often approach change management from that perspective:
What do people need to know? When do they need the information? And how should it be
communicated to them?
Biggest Reward from this Career
If, at any point during a project, someone says they appreciated the information
shared or the process they went through to learn, that is when I feel most rewarded. It means I did my job right.
What Motivates You as a PNW Chapter Volunteer?
I’m a big believer in associations. Aside from my last job, I can attribute every
professional role I’ve held to some sort of professional association or networking. I also firmly
believe that you get out of an organization what you put into it. So, I do my best to be an
active member and volunteer. For this reason, I’m working to organize an in-person networking group in Portland.
What's Next?
Professionally, I’m looking for my next role. I want a position (full-time or contract)
where I can work with smart people, learn something new each day, and make a meaningful
contribution to the work and the people around me. Ideally, the role would incorporate my
expertise in communications and change management.
